Default Repositioning Cruises...When is the best time to book?

I see these great prices on repositioning cruises.

How far in advance should one book this type of cruise especially if it's a back-to-back one as well?

I would think these cruises fill up pretty fast since they are a one-shot time.

Hi Cathy,
I'd book as soon as you decide that you want to do that cruise. Most of these cruises are in the spring/fall when ships are going or returning from Alaska, so if you see the one you want to do, go ahead and book it. You always have a better cabin choice when booking early. What ship are you looking to do?

I've taken a couple repositioning cruises on HAL's Statendam from Vancouver to San Diego (both directions). Both times the ship was half empty [hence the good prices], but on one of the trips they did a lot of at-sea renovation, making it a noisy trip. If you enjoy days at sea and, in the case of Alaska-Hawaii repositioning, dramatic views of the Pacific coast, they're a terrific deal!

Donna thanks.

I was looking at the April/May repositioning on the Summit.

End of April leaves Ft. Lauderdale through Panama Canal to San Diego then in early May leaves San Diego and does California coast to Alaska and ends in Vancouver.

**************

Anita....repositioning is when the let's say the Summit leaves the Caribbean sailing season and is starting its Alaska season. The ship has to get from Ft. Lauderdale to San Diego, but then San Diego to Vancouver for it's Alaskan summer itininary.

The above cruise is 14 day to San Diego and then a 14 day to Alaska ending in Vancouver.

The above cruise I mentioned will then do it's repositioning again in September back to Ft. Lauderdale for the winter months in the Caribbean. There might even be another repositioning to Europe. I'm really not sure on the entire itinerary. But this is the idea.

Ships will be repositioned for a variety of reasons but most likely to fulfill a cruise schedule which is seasonal. Some Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/San Juan based ships will relocate to New York/Boston/Baltimore for the summer to book sailings to Canada and Bermuda. Getting the ship to the new home pier might as well have some revenue on board so they sell these cabins for one-way travel. You would board in Miami and get off in New York.

Regards,
Thomas
