Default Sail and Sign Card Question

Does anyone know how long cruise ships have used the sail and sign card system for billing? What was used before...cash...run a tab...?? Thanks

Default Re: Sail and Sign Card Question

When I first cruised P&O in '73 it was all put on my account. Being a poor college student, I didn't have a credit card back then and had to pay in cash at the end. As I recall, it came to about $150 for a 15-day voyage.
