we are planning a cruise to Belize, Colon, and Limon on Carnival, in February. What is the best way to phone home. The ports normally just have the rip off phones that just take their card. any suggestions. Last time we bought on line phone card that was supposed to be universal, but no phone took them. thanx.
I have used the AT&T universal card, but they will charge you a $7.50 fee just to connect you, even if all you get is the answering machine!
My suggestion is to buy pre-paid calling cards locally when you arrive in a port.
If this is too confusing (and it can be!) then one thing we have done in big cities before is to go into hotels and ask them if they have a business center. Many times they will let you call internationally for a reasonable fee. It isn't cheap, but at least you don't get ripped off.
Sorry, I know this is sketchy advice, but it is the best I can do for now.
I am the editor, but I also speculate, ask questions and play devil's advocate. I reserve the right to change my mind.
We have used the "calling center" in the past, you go to these places, put your name on a "reservation " list per sey and wait for them to call you.(get there right away so you don't have to wait more than a few minutes) You pay a flat rate for so much time, if you go over your time, watch-out they really charge you! its just for a quick hello, how are you, we are fine type of thing. Ships e-mail or local internet cafes are another option.
