Default Proof of Citizenship/Residency

We are taking my mom for her 77th birthday on a NYC to Bahamas cruise (NCL Dawn). She has an original birth certificate and a valid state driver's license with photo. Our agent says she should bring a marriage certificate, but the one she has looks not to be from the state of NY, but from the church. Given that its been 40+ years since her marriage, finding an original may be difficult.

Is this necessary or should we try to get her a passport? Our cruise is set for 9/28.

The original birthcertificate & government issued photo ID will be sufficient as long as she was born in the USA.

"Technically" she needs proof of her name change which a marrage certificate shows but 'practically' they know and only an idiot would make a fuss over it. Should be no problem at all and on the off chance you get a nutcase at the check in just demand to see a supervisor.

Get her a passport. Then you KNOW there will be no problem. Doesn't sound like a cruise you want to have messed up.

Yep, agree with AR,
Passports are the best identification you can have, you should still have time to apply and receive it, good luck and enjoy the cruise with mom.

Get a passport. If you pay a little extra they'll get it to you very quickly.
