No, they select luggage randomly. If you put cable ties on them you are less likely to get the curious luggage handler thief at the airport. The security guys will cut off the cable ties and replace them when they are done searching. Just remember to put a pair of nail clippers in an outside compartment of your luggage so you can snip off those ties when you get your luggage. And remember you can't take those, or a knife, or scissors on the airplane.

I'm so glad you are going on your cruise. You will have a blast. Please bring back lots of pictures to show us.

Regards,
Thomas

ditto what Thomas said, the cable/wire ties are the best way to secure your luggage.

I just got back - the airport made my friend remove his lock on his suitcase before handing it in. We went all unlocked - I used a "twist tie" from a sandwich bag on the way there - had no problems. If all your valuable stuff is in your carry on, you won't have anything to worry about (ie. theft). I figure, if someone is so desperate as to steal my clothes - go ahead. I kept my cameras, and all valuables in my carryon.

Just don't forget to pack something on the outside pocket of your checked luggage to cut those cables. And the outside pocket should be accesible to open not locked or with a cable tie. Nail clippers work the best.

I personally just use those twist wire ties and have no problems.

Does the cruise line seach the luggage too? Or is all this simply for the airlines? I will be driving to the port, can I lock my luggage?

Lock your luggage. The cruiseline can and does sometimes x-ray your bags and they can choose to search them if they feel it necessary. Fortunately they are more reasonable in conducting these searchs than the TSA at the airports who seem to search for no reason at all.
