We got the receipt for our cruise coming up in May. It says that the names on the tickets need to match the names on the proof of citizenship. My question is my birth certificate is of course in my maiden name so that will not match. Also are they real picky about middle initials?

Well there's no way that your birth certificate is going to match your license unless you keep your maiden name once you get married. I've been on several cruises and all i've ever used is my birth certificate and my drivers license and i'm married. I'm not sure how they are about the initial thing. Either call up the cruisline or ask your TA. Happy sailing.
Cindy, check your itinerary again. You have to make at least one Canadian port call (probably Vancouver, judging by the available itineraries). The Passenger Service (Jones) Act requires non-US flagged ships to make at least one 'far foreign' port call on all cruises terminating in the US.
Won't you be stopping or boarding in Canada? Whenever you enter the U.S. from a foreign port you must clear Immigrations. To do so you have to have proper identification.
I find having a passport is so widly accepted as the best form of identification, starting when arriving at the airport, first thing they as is for your passport.
Our Alaska cruise (also May 2004)makes a stop at Victoria BC. Also, some of the shore excursions (I think from Skagway) say bring passport/ID because the tour goes into Canada.
Have to agree with all before, a passport is the way to go. Makes getting through so much faster and easier.

Alaska
I used my Birth Certificate (with my maiden name) and my drivers license with my married name and had no troubles going on our eastern carribean cruise in February.
Best thing is to bring your marriage license along just in case to show the name change. I did but was never asked for it.
We went on the NCL Sky to Alaska in Sept of 2001 (yeah..right after 9/11)
My birth certificate is in my maiden name & I had no trouble. Just returned from Carnival Victory to Nova Scotia out of NYC (9/27-10/4)..again, just had my birth certificate and drivers license, no trouble. Your driver's licence has your DOB & the first & middle should match. If the cruise line says it will accept those forms of ID, then maybe I'm naive, but that's what I took. PS..I AM really cheap too...so..if you're going to worry about it..get a passport.
