Default Canceling Cruise & port Charges

In the book, "Berlitz Ocean Cruising and Cruise Ships 2003", the author wrote "Many cruise lines do not return port taxes, which are not part of the cruise fare " Has anyone had this experience, i.e. canceling and not getting back port charges. We had to cancel a cruise with Princess Cruises who did not return the port charges but did return the federal taxes. Fortunately my travel insurer remitted $100%amount of the fare plus port charges and the federal taxes(which I returned to the insurer). I have to point out that our fare for the cruise from Princess home office was not broken down as to the fare for the cruise, port charges and federal taxes. Their brochure for the cruise indicated the port chages for two passengers in a cabin were $440.
