Default tips

Does anybody out there have an opinion on Celebrity's new approach to tipping, ie
this is the first time our travel agent has asked us for the gratuties 9 months before
we sail,it would be more honest of Celebrity to bump up the price by the recommended
tip and scrap its tipping policy altogether. I would still prefer the civilised
method of rewarding good service at the end of the cruise, the new new way seems
to impersonal

I would not 'pre-pay' the tips, period. They will add the tips to your shipboard account automatically in the recommended amount and you can adjust them as you desire anytime during the cruise. We prefer to remove them entirely and tip in the "old-fashioned" method as it is more personal and tipping is a personal matter to us. I believe in rewarding those that make our cruise great and also wish to do so in person and add my vocal expressions of thanks at the same time.

I like to personally tip.

If I get exceptional service, the person deserves more than the norm.

Since when has Celebrity gone to auto tipping?

I know there are some TA's who offer the option to prepay your tips, but that is different than auto tipping. I would not pre-pay and it all depends on how the service is if I remove the auto tipping charges from my account or not.

We are from the U.K., and travel agents are quoting cruise price and then tips,
suggesting that Celebrity are trying to make the cruise a cash free zone.

In the last two weeks, every quote we have asked for, the gratuties have also been
quoted.

We have sailed with Celebrity seven times, this is the first time this has happened

I wonder what happens to the service then?

Are they actually asking you to pay the tips with the price of the cruise or are they just making folks aware how much the tips will be so you can plan for it? If it is the latter, I'd be okay with that, but I would not pay the tips prior to sailing.

I wouldn't pay the tips now but wait and let them charge your onboard account. You might as well have the money in the bank earning interest rather than Celebrity.

Thomas

I agree - don't pay the tips up front....tell them to quote you the price sans tips. And tell them you will tip at your discretion on board.

We were just on the Connie in June. Nothing was said beforehand about tips. Onboard we were given a slip to return to the desk. You could tip the standard amount, and you could add more if you wished for specific people. When you turned in the slip you were given vouchers to put in the envelopes so you could personally shake hands and express your thanks. The tips themselves, of course went on the shipboard account. If you really wanted to, you could use cash as before.

We thought this was the best of all worlds: no need to screw around with cash, but there was still the opportunity to reward as desired, and to "present" the tip in person.

I wonder (and please don't bash me for this) if this is something relatively unique to the British cruise market?

Actually we are going on our first cruise with Carnival(the Imagination November 18th) and the gratuities and drinks are included.

This is a group theme cruise so the TA arranged the package with Carnival.

This is the same thing that is now being done on RCI cruises. It was done on Serenade of the Seas, Hawaii to Vacouver, last May.

Like AR, I personally like this. It gives you the opportunity to tip in the standard method or do so without the hassle of counting out cash. I will add additional money to an envelope if I feel an individual has performed above expectations.

Take care,
Mike

This does not apply to Americans, as we are accustomed to tipping for services rendered. I know for a fact that many Europeans don't tip on a ship. They are used to having their gratuities already included when the bill it is presented to them. Similar to our 15 % gratuity added to the bar bill on a ship. That may be the reason that the cruise line asks for the tips in advance.
