Default Gratuities?

Do you think that the $10 gratuity per person per day is profitable for the passenger and fair to those who have really served you? Or do you think that it is better if the passenger removes the automatic gratuity and tips the workers deserving and the amount as he see fits? Is it a norm to wave the automatic gratuity or is it frowned upon?

That is totally up to you. If you feel it is more important to give the gratuity directly to the staff go ahead and do that. There will be NO problem in having the auto tipping taken off your sail and sign card. If you feel they a different amount than the auto tip you can increase or decrease the auto tip with no problem. If you feel they deserve more you can also leave the auto tip and give an envelope with more to those you feel are deserving.

The only advantage of auto tipping for the passenger is the fact they do not have to try to carry or find the cash to put in the envelopes and you won't see the staff holding their hands out on the last night.

It is frowned on literally, I watched several crew memebers stand by the gangway looking at a print out of people who removed tips, and there were a lot of frowns.

you should leave the autotips alone unless there is a serious problem. then if you like tip cash to whomever you like for outstanding service above and beyond.

IF YOU LEAVE THE TIPS ON, then the people you give extra too will get to keep it. otherwise it goes into the pot for everyone.

I believe that by and large the workers deserve more than the standard tip they recieve.
they work incredilby hard and very long hours 7 days a week. and Tips are their main pay.
