On the long plane ride to Miami, does anyone know what the restrictions are for
personal electronics on board the airplane. I have one of those portable little DVD players, and would like to use it on board the airplane. Do they allow you to use
your electronics once the plane is at cruising altitude, or are you not permitted to
use them, at all. It's been awhile since I've flown, and with the added security, I
need to ask.
Location: Wisconsin....about 100 miles south of the Frozen Tundra and 70 miles east of Camp Randall
Re: Airplane/ onboard electronics
The flight crew will announce when it is okay to use electronic equipment (except for cell phones.) They will also announce when it is time to put the equipment away, like Marc said when the plane is cleared to land. Once the plane is on the ground, cell phones can be used.

while on the subject of portable DVD players, we're considering buying one to entertain the kids on our plane ride and hope to hook it up to our cabin's tv. Any recommendations on what to buy? I've heard that you can sometimes rent these but have no idea where to look for rentals. Again, any ideas?
Yes, you can buy a good one at Circuit City for about $200. The brand is Initial. I've never heard of this brand but after perusing the consumer ratings it got high marks and better ratings than some costing $400 and more. I bought one and am very pleased with it.
Whether you can hook it up to your cabin T.V. is going to depend on what T.V. is used. Some T.V.'s don't have the input jacks needed. I've been on some ships where I wanted to plug my camcorder into the T.V. to watch the videos I've shot and found no hookups. Now that I've moved into the DVD age I am checking the T.V.'s for hookups and my last cruise the T.V. was equipped to accept input devices.
Like some casino hotels, I think the cruiselines put T.V.'s in the cabins which don't have the input jacks because they don't want you sitting in the room watching movies, they want you out on the ship spending money.
We're taking our laptop along for the specific purpose of having the option of watching movies available for our kids (hopefully, they won't need it!! ;] ) and to upload photos from the digicam so we don't have to store them on the memory card...
