Is it foolish to travel without travel insur if you are trav

I am planning a last minute cruise and am not sure whether I should purchase travel insurance. It is probably a gamble to go without it, but I am curious to see what others have to say. Thanks.

Yes it is foolish. Just because you may not be going to cancel your cruise does not mean that you will not have delays or that you won't be hurt or get sick on board or on land and require evacuation and medical treatment both of which cost multi thousands of dollars and must be paid before they will even come get you.
God forbid someone should die, you know what it costs to repariate a body? Or is something shoud happen to a family member at home and you have to come back?
Yes get the insurance.

Insurance is always a gamble. But , who is to say you won't come down with a virus next week, have a car accident, have trouble reaching the port, lose your luggage, get sick on board or any other insurable event. We don't even think twice and our TA doesn't even ask anymore, she just includes it in the price.

Sitting in the San Juan airport from 2:15 to 10 or 11 AM with a 2 yr old???????

You'll NEED a cruise after that!

I suggest checking around with some of the various hotels. Perhaps you could get an inexpensive rate for a "day room" since you're arriving so late.

Absolutely DO get travel insurance . . . ALWAYS . . . no matter what your age is!

get the insurance, get basic insurance but be sure to get medical evacuation coverage, that would be a huge expense if needed.

Re: Is it foolish to travel without travel insur if you are

If you are travelling away from your home country (where you have medical cover presumably), you need travel insurance to cover you in the event of illness/accident - basically - anything medical. Your medical cover at home will not have the least bit of interest once you leave the country.

That's just the medical part of it, which if things got bad could leave you with a bill of several million dollars.

Other things that insurance covers:-

Lost luggage - missed departure - delayed departure - lost money - lost passports - public liability (you could get sued for x million $ for accidentally hurting somebody) - neccessary cancelation before departure owing to your illness or that other a close relative..... the list is quite large.

When I book a cruise the booking form asks me whether I want their insurance, and if not then I must specify with whom I have bought insurance and what the policy number is. My cruise line does not want to be lumbered with me in the middle of the ocean wanting an airlift but without insurance (or a $1 million credit card handy!!!!)

Peace of mind.

I don't think having travel insurance is foolish...Just think of the stuff that can go wrong on the way or upon arrival...LOST luggage is one I can think of. My coverage also includes auto accidents on the way to the port (we're driving) and unemployment.

Gonna disagree here ...

Never bought insurance, and just got off a cruise at the last minute.

I think if you are booking so far out that you don't know what time will tell, it might be worth it. But for healthy people leaving in 5 days to 4 months, I think it's money that could be better spent if you are OK with letting the cruise price slide if you can't make it.

Re: Re: Is it foolish to travel without travel insur if you

But do remember cruise insurance does not only cover the cost of the cruise if you can't make it but delays in baggage, loss of baggage, medical coverage (mine does) for emergencies, etc.....

Therefore to me it is worth no matter how long til you cruise. I'd hate to lose my luggage and not have insurance to get reimbursed. That would totally suck.
