As a Mother of a Black/White Daughter and from what I have read it is much cheaper to get your hair braided back in the States also if you get your hair braided on the cruise bring your own bands, beads and brushes and braid lotion. All these supplies are at Sallys beauty supply. Remember braiding is a very long process, alot of kids likes the braids done around face and the rest of their hair down.

my daughter had her hair braided in cozumel an it was $40, the entire head. She said she should have just gotten half, the top and sides and left the back down because she was uncomfortable with the whole head. We didn't bring any supplies and she left them in for a few days. It takes a while and they must keep track of time or they may mis the boat as we almost did. If they are like us when you start having fun you lose track of time. Have fun.

You need to be careful who you let braid your childs hair. They may use
a dirty combs and brushes. They use the same one on everyone. They
can get infections where you need to take them to the doctor from this. I
am a Cosmetologist. Example: Dirty comb scratching their scalp can cause
infection if not clean. In the states we are required to clean combes with a solution
called Barbicide that kills everything including aids virus. They dont have the
same rules we have. Just wanted to give you a heads up on it.

they can get it done on just about any island. Steer clear from the locals who come up to you and offer" Pretty lady may i braid your hair?" happens all the time. Go to local "booth" where they have all their supplies sprawled out in front of you. Bring your own comb. The going rate on most islands is about $10.00 per braid if only a few strands are done, ask the cost for the whole head beforehand. Its time consuming, so get it done in the morning, they may just want to have a couple of strands done and not the whole head, also if they get the whole head done, their scalp is much more prone to sunburn- they should wear hats or sunscreen .

Tia,

A black/white daughter?? How cute!! Is that like a black & white cookie??

Reminds me of the story I heard from an elderly black gentleman. He said a child came up to him (who obviously had never seen a black man before!) and said, "Look mommy! A chocolate man!" He said it made him smile, that it was the nicest way he's ever been described....hee hee.....

We recently went on Disney. We made an app't for my daughter to have it done there. They were going to charge 80.00 for her entire head. She has long hair. We got off at Freeport and they had a booth there. She approached us and asked if we wanted her hair braided. She started much higher and I said we were just going to shop. Then she came down to 40.00! We took it!
Bring your OWN combs and make sure you put sunblock in between the braids on the scalp. Spray on works nice.
My daughter loved it and she took them out in about 3 weeks even though they would have lasted longer.

Jean, my daughter is the cutest child (but every parent thinks the same).
My daughter calls herself Mocha- instead of black/ white.

Regarding the braids, you can leave them in till about 6 wks and then it has
been recommended to take them out under the shower will applying conditioner
at the same time to prevent breakage. I will take her to have her hair braided at home before the cruise so she will spend less time under the comb and I will have less products to drag on board with me.

Folks,

If you get your hair braided, be sure to put sunscreen on your scalp where it is now exposed. I've read on several other boards about people who have gotten everything from severe burns to sunstroke supposedly from not taking this precaution. This part of the scalp never really seees the sun, and is particularly sensitive. A simple precaution can prevent a good time from turning bad.

Please don't take this the wrong way but some people just do not look good in braids or cornrows. On our cruise we saw several girls with just braids around their face and they looked very nice but one lady (about 45) had her hair done in cornrows and she looked horrible.

Since I will be cruising to Mexico I dont think I will see many cornrows on
grown woman with long blonde hair. I didnt like it on Bo Derek and I dont think it looks good on women like me (caucasian). Please nobody take this comment the wrong way, just my opinion.
