Freestyle dinning is open seating, with whom and whenever you want to eat. Normally, you are assigned a time, and a table in which you will dine the whole cruise. The upside to that is that you get to know your tablemates and your servers. The servers will tend to go out of their way for you, because they can do well on tips. With Freestyle, you may get a different table, time, server, and companions at each meal. The service is still very good, but there is a slight drop off. Many folks will say that Freestyle is bad because you may have to wait in line. I have not found this to be a big problem. I am used to waiting at good places to get a table on land, why not on the sea?
Freestyle dining is after you have done the compulsoriy dining. No wait, that's ice skating.
Freestyle dining is a trademark of Norwegian Cruise lines. Basically it is an eat when you want, where you want and with whom you want policy. This is as opposed to the first seating, second seating assigned table scenario that is typical on most ships.
Norwegian typically gives you a choice of venues to eat , when you want to eat.
