Default question that was not discussed

Hi-
I have been reading messages and have not seen these questions discussed.
1. How much do you tip airport porters for luggage and cruise ship excursion guides .
2. If you book your trip through the cruiselines including air --- what happens
if your flight is cancelled due to weather at your connecting flight. Does the airport reroute you- Do you call the cruiseline-How do you make arrangements to meet up with your ship if you miss it- Who pays for arrangements- airline or cruiseline Do they get you a hotel? Do they reimburse you for a lost day?
3.what happens if your port airport is closed when the ship is scheduled to leave, and where is the ship?
4. What happens if your ship can't get back to the port you started at for your return flights.
Thanks for your input- Is this why you buy insurance? What happens if you don't have any?

I have a couple of questions of my own to add to this. I'll try to indicate what parts of your questions I already know the answers to.

1. Skycaps typically get $1-$2 per bag.

I also wonder what to tip tour guides. Also, is there a difference between what you tip regular tour guides, vs. those for "active" excursions? I mean, I'm basically trusting this person teaching me how to snorkel with my life!

2. Travel insurance (assuming you've purchased it) will cover the cost of transporting you to catch up with the ship, in case you miss it. As far as I can tell, you don't get compensated for the lost day, unless there is a special rider on your insurance policy.

If you don't have travel insurance, you are basically "self-insuring" yourself for many of the scenarios you've outlined. In other words, you'll have to pay extra to recover from whatever ill-effects you may encounter from these situations. That is indeed why people buy travel insurance, and indeed the fact that travel insurance is offered, is the foundation for neither the airlines nor the cruise lines providing financial assistance in these situations, themselves.

We tipped from $5 to $10 pp for our excursions. Also, you will want to tip the driver $1 or $2 if you catch a ride to the end of the dock, the visitor bureau etc.

Read how each insurance company will handle each situation you mentioned before you buy. insuremytrip.com is a good place to compare.

Here is my experience:

1. How much do you tip airport porters for luggage and cruise ship excursion guides .
$2 a bag. I have given $5 for a very heavy bag.

2. If you book your trip through the cruise lines including air --- what happens
if your flight is canceled due to weather at your connecting flight. Does the airport reroute you- Do you call the cruise line-How do you make arrangements to meet up with your ship if you miss it- Who pays for arrangements- airline or cruise line Do they get you a hotel? Do they reimburse you for a lost day?

If your flight is canceled due to weather you are subject to airline policies and the cruise line will do little in regard to weather related issues. You should work with the airlines to see what alternatives you have to get you to the port. They may reroute you but they will rarely put you on another carrier if it is weather related. The next call should be to your agent. The cruise line should be informed that you will be late. The cruise line acts as an agent for the airlines but does not take responsibility for circumstances outside of their control.

If you miss the ship the cruise line MAY pay and make arrangements to get you to the next port. They MAY also provide a hotel. There is no guarantee that this will happen. Many times they will but there are many reports of this not happening.

Your best bet is to fly in a day early to avoid these situations.

3.what happens if your port airport is closed when the ship is scheduled to leave, and where is the ship?

The cruise may be delayed by one day and the ship may remain at sea. The ship may also be diverted to another port and transportation will be arranged to take you to that port. There are representatives at the airports to meet you when you get off the plane and they will be the ones to talk to about this and any other problems. They will have the cruise line sign and in the uniform of the cruise line.

This rarely occurs.

4. What happens if your ship can't get back to the port you started at for your return flights

The cruise line will usually arrange for transportation for you to the airport you are scheduled to leave from or your return trip home. This also, rarely occurs.

The bottom line is GET THE INSURANCE. Not just for the trip delay, lost luggage or cancellation benefits then for the medical and evacuation. It is well worth the money and the peace of mind it buys.

Take care,
Mike

Hi Rose,

All I can say is BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE That is the most important thing to do. Talk to your ta about the other questions.
As for tips; $2.00 peb bag, air port sky caps
Guides; this should be included with the tour, but I sometimes give a little something extra. Tips are handy to give in the currency of the country you are visiting. The tour director can get $1.00 to $3.00.
Here are some guild lines for different countries,
Australia: dining is included in bill. Taxi 10% samll services $1.00 australia money.
Brazil dining 10% if not included in bill. Taxi 10'%
Germany: dining, Included in bill, Taxi 10% all other 1-2 DM
Mexico: Dining 15% Taxi optional, other services: 50-100 pesos
In Mexico make sure you discuss the price of a taxi before you get in, that like to dicker.
I wont cover all the countries here. Were are you going?

Also get a good guide book that will cover some of your concerns.
Hope this help some.
Carole

Thank you all for your info-
Sorry my message was a little overkill, but I guess I got a little scared with Charley around. Two years ago, I was cruising in August and I don't think I even looked at the weather forecast. ( New Orleans,Cayman, Jamaica and Cozumel)
After experiencing Isabel last year, it is still too fresh in my mind and now I'm gun shy.
I haven't bought insurance, but was under the impression that the cruiseline would make arrangements for us to get to the ship if we booked our air through them.(without extra insurance)
I also book our sidetrips with the cruiseline (even though more expensive) to be sure we don't miss the ship. Ok -so I'm a little paranoid- (we did do some exploring on our own, but just not too far)
I have had wonderful cruise experiences and I don't want that to change. This time, I will be with my two sons ages 19 and 22.
This is the first I knew about these message boards and they really are great. My other cruises I was on my own - the only thing I didn't count on was my feet swelling.
Thankfully, I was with my sister and her feet were bigger than mine, so I was able to wear her shoes.
I was on this same cruise two years ago, but it is going to Dominica instead of Martinique, so I know what to expect. I enjoyed the ship (Destiny) and ports (San Juan, St Thomas, Barbados, Aruba) so much, that I wanted my kids to go.
They also went to Cayman,Belize, Honduras and Cozumel on another cruise with me in 1999- Thank God they are older now, but needless to say they also love cruising.
Do you all have any suggestions for excursions? I was thinking of going to St.John this time. I snorkeled in Aruba at Baby beach, but only saw brain coral and the current was strong. Now I'm trying to figure if it is better to go on these other islands.(It is going to be hard to compete with Belize)
Enough said- I'm rambling- Thanks again-
