Default What do I need this for?

When a friend of mine knew I was going on a cruise in the new year, she bought me a roll of duck tape! I think this is a strange present but she said it is the most useful thing she packs when going on a cruise. I didn't like to ask what is so useful about it. Does anyone know?

Repairing damaged luggage; if you have an outside cabin and like it dark in the cabin, you can tape the curtain closed........where is duct tape pro when you need him?

I recently asked the same question. Other than luggage and curtains, I was told it's a quick repair for hems & seams. We had never taken it before but will this time.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will definitely take it and see now why my friend bought it for me! Any other hints or things I should take with me that I wouldn't necessarily think of??

Either Wal Mart or K Mart sell clear duct tape which could be even more useful for unobtrusive repairs!

Bring clothes pins. Your swimsuits will dry faster on the bathroom clothesline (and won't fall off) than if you just drape them over the line.

Also, bring a small tote or beach bag to take off the ship with you at each port. It's easier to keep up with your towels, sunscreen, etc., and also provides a place to keep all your purchases.

Oh yeah - bring an extension cord and/or power strip for extra outlets.

We got bright yellow (flourescent yellow) duct tape at Walmart and wrapped it around our 3 black suitcases upon disembarkation. It took us about 30 seconds to find ALL our luggage in the warehouse upon leaving the ship.

Really really helped alot! I have heard of women using it to make a strapless bra and using it to keep the curtains open too.

Its a small world Turcondo, my husband and I are flying out on the Coral on his birthday in March as well, if its the same day maybe we can meet up and discuss our Duct Tape plans! Personally I prefer the Clear version to the Silver or Black type, it's so much easier to hide under my strapless dress.

Duck tape is good for stopping the quacking :-) Duct tape I'm sure is good for all the things people have mentioned, but it's just another one of those things that isn't needed on a cruise. I've taken well over 25 cruises and never felt tape-deprived.

There are a million things you can take that might be marginally useful. We pack light, don't haul around all that gunk, and if we have a problem we present it to the steward or the purser to solve. They always do. That's why they're there.

I just recently came back from a cruise (Sept 11-18) and wished I had brought some with me. After all the shopping we did at Labadee the room attendant was gracious enough to find us cardboard to pack our artwork in, but it was rough finding tape to tape the package up. We said "I guess it would have been a good idea afterall to bring duck tape with us". It is coming on the next trip.

DUCT tape. It is for taping DUCTS. It is very cruel to tape ducKs.

DUCT. Yes, when you say "duct" and "tape" together, it does sound like "duck tape." It's understandable that people, at first, think that you're saying duck. There is even a brand called Duck Duct Tape, which causes even more confusion. However, we all know that people aren't running around, taping ducks together. Duct tape.

Sorry. That really bothers me.

If you want the real answer ask: Donald, Daisy, Huey, Dewey or Louie!!!!!

Sorry for the AWFUL humor, but I called it duck tape for years before someone told me it was duct tape.

And, if you have a situation where you really need it, it IS what it is quacked up to be!

I don't like to disagree with everyone but I have got my roll of tape out that I was given as a present and it definitely says "Duck tape" on the front and not duct tape - still I am sure it serves the same useful purpose whatever it is called!!

"Duct tape pro" actually is a real person (he belongs to me) and he created the most lovely duct tape ship for our door decoration last week on the Glory. I'm sure he'll be posting here soon once he hears the words "duct tape"

YAY! A NEW DUCT TAPE POST! wow well duct tape is the most usefull thing in the world.
i have made a vest, shoes, hats, shirt, pants, flowers, note book holders, backpacks, flag, ship i know ive made more but i cant think of it right now. if you want to learn more about duct tape you can read the books by Jim and TIm the duct tape guys also you go to the websites www.ducttapeguys.com , www.ducktapeclub.com , www.ducttapefashions.com
as far as on a cruise if you lose your swimsuit in the pool make a new one.
if your hat gets blown off on the top deck make a new one .
keep your money safe in the ports by puting it on some sticky side out duct tape, neither you or the pickpocketers cant get it.
if you want me to post more about duct tape just ask :-)
and tigerslp yes it is for heating ducts but its only duct tape when it can withstand the heat or its duck tape. the first duct tape was duck tape made in WWII for keeping ammo boxes dry.

If the boat springs a leak, you can offer your "Duck Tape" brand duct tape to the captain and be a hero!

You ask what are some other things that are useful..try the shoe bag..the kind you hang over the top of the door..it has sooooo many pockets for film, brushes, cameras and shoes of course..but it will hold all that little stuff that takes up so much room on the dresser..another thing..bungee cords..If you have a balcony, you can use a cord to hod the door open at night so you can hear the ocean and feel the breeze.
