Pay the $50 now and go. However make it clear to your Travel Agent that they dropped the ball. If you have proof that the name you supplied the agent was correct it is the agents problem. It is their responsibility to make sure the documents are correct before they send them out to you. This is one of the reasons that the cruise line sends the documents to the travel agent and not directly to you. They should examine the documents to make sure they are accurate.
If the name on the original order was correct then the agent should pay the name change fee.
However, don't let fighting over who is going to pay for it stop the name change from happening. As it was said, Carnival already has their fare and they don't care if someone doesn't sail.
