I don't know a thing about insurance, so I wonder how does it work if we have to cancel for covered reasons, with regards to airfare. If we buy the cruise line insurance, air not through them though, do they refund airfare if the ticket is a restricted non refundable ticket?
You need to check the policy, but most will refund the air price through the travel insurance company, not the cruiseline. Its always smart to purchase the insurance.
I've been told to never take the insurance through the cruiseline. In case they go bankrupt the insurance would be worthless. Don't know how true this is....?

We had non-refundable airfares and our trip was delayed due to hurricane Jeanne. The travel insurance TripMate took care of everything! I believe you buy the cruise insurance according to the price of your trip. Our trip cost was appx $1500 p/p and the cruise insurance was about $45. The price was much cheaper than the cruiselines insurance and we had no trouble getting reimbursed for our expenses.
We booked our cruise (with insurance) in January but didn't get flights until Feb. I just faxed the flight info to the TA and she put the flights on the insurance. It made a difference for one cabin but not the other. The upcharge just went on the credit card.
