Default Need help ASAP

WE have to pay our final payment tommorrow, I called our TA to make sure of the price and want her to make sure we got the 3and 4 persone rate on our room. Also to check how much our insurance would be, well after telling me the total cost of the trip there was a differnce of $556.00 dollars. So I called her back and she said that was what the cruise line call "cruise fares" and that she did not know what that meant. I think she would know or at least could find our for me, but thats what she keeps telling me cruise fares!!!! So do any of you have any ideas what this could be, I'm kinda disapointed I don't want to pay for something that I have no idea what it for plus that's alot of money!!! Also I didn't realize how much travel insurance was for 4 people($436.00) does that sound right?? Thanks for any help you can give me, I really like these sites for information, so I'll wait and see if I get any responds from any of you untill I make my final payment. KMBB

Hi KMBB,
There are also taxes and port charges that get added on, but you should of already had a total when you first booked. As for the insurance, you can also purchase it through travel insurance companies. Here are a few you can check and just purchase yourself:

Access America

CSA Travel Protection

Travel Guard

KMBB,

To me it sounds like this agent is not very knowledgeable about cruises and cruise pricing.

What your TA is probably referring to is non-comissinable fares, also known as "port charges and taxes". The charge of $566 for four people sounds about right. The insurance sounds reasonable if it is the cruise lines policy. I am assuming this is a seven day cruise.

However, it is VERY bad that she did not give you the TOTAL cost at time of booking. That means the total cost of:

Cruise,
Non-comissionable fares (port charges)
taxes and fees
insurance
air (if through her or cruise line)

Before paying any more money make sure you do so by credit card and that the cruise portion of the payment go to the cruise line and not her or her agency. Your initial deposit should have also been made to the cruise line and at that time you should have received a booking number from the cruise line. Make sure you did. If you did not then something is wrong.

Take care,
Mike

Our travel agent set up insurance for the 2 of us through accessamerica and it was only $111.00 total for a 7 night cruise. I wonder if that travel agent purchased your insurance directly though the cruise line, I have noticed the insurance the cruise line sells is expensive.

Donna and Mike--- Thanks for your comments. My cruise is a 7 day cruise and I do have a booking number, initial deposit was made way back and the whole price was told to me then. My TA is not a cruise TA, so she really does not know much about cruiseing, but I would think that she could explain that charge. She did say it was per person ($139:00) Everything else is OK, but I don't know what this fee is, I did call RCC but they could not tell me anything since I did not book through them. I'm thinking it could be a comission fee and she might not want to tell me. We did break it all down and the taxes and port charges were already accounted for. So I guess I might give her a call again today, and see if she can give me more information, I hate to pay for something I don't know what I'm paying for. I should have call her a little earlier so I would have more time to check this out. Thanks for your help, KMBB

KMBB:

Stick with it. Don't pay for something unless you know what you are paying for. The agent or agency is getting their commission from the cruise line. If she is charging you another commission on top of that then you need to find another agent for your next cruise or even this one. $139 is a pretty hefty commission for a seven day cruise and for that amount of money you REALLY deserve an explanation and better service.

Port charges or non-commissionable fees that the cruise lines charge are hard to explain but they are put under that bucket and should be listed as a line item in your invoice as such.

Take care and I hope it all works out and you have the cruise of and vacation of a lifetime.
Mike

TA office not open yet, I hate to have to call her again, but at $139.00 per person that's alot of extra money that I could use for my cruise($556.00 total) so I'll let you know what she says, I afraid I'm going to get a run around ansewer, and won't be able to do any thing about it except learn from experience and not book with her again.. I'm too close to my cruise to give it up and try to re-book, we are really excited about going. (first time for my boys to be on a cruise and we have what I think is a great room(1692 back of boat, Navagitor) So I will try later to get through to her, but I doubt that I will have any luck in finding out what that extra money is for, she probally knows that I will not cancel my cruise because of it(woulnd't be able to get the same room or cruise) Oh well, I'm still really looking forward to my cruise and will have a good time. KMBB

I should have call her early to check on everything, I will be better prepared next time.

KMBB,
Should be very simple to explain. Get the TA to do a conference call with the cruise line and have it explained in detail. If TA has made an error and is unable to rectify it, escalate the matter to someone in management of the agency. It sounds like it could be port charges, which should have been assessed when the reservations were originally made. As far as insurance is concerned, was that charge disclosed at the time of booking as well? I would start by getting TA and the cruiseline on the phone and then see what can be done to reduce the insurance cost, like obtaining your own. Good luck, let us know what happens.

Sounds odd to me. We booked our cruise nine months ago, but knew right up front how much the deposit was and how much the balance was. We paid $118.00 insurance for two of us on a five day cruise. I would definately find out why all the extra costs at this point.

Something sounds fishy. I, too, used a TA for my cruie and she told me the exact amount for everything. After I made the final payment on my cruise, the price dropped and she gave me a check for the difference.

We didnt have any trouble at all with our TA. She was always there to answer any questions I had and didnt mind me calling. I gave her a "tip" for all the hard work she did for me and putting up wih me for so long. We booked in October for a July cruise. The service she gave was exceptional. By reading these posts, I consider myself lucky that I have Joanie. She is awesome!!!

Keep working on her. I hope everything works out for you!

Regarding insurance, this is probably cancelation and medical insurance together, that means if something happened ,accident or death you would be covered. However if you want you could just get medical which will be alot cheaper.

Ok everyone---- here's what I was told. I did have the total cruise priced when I booked it along time ago. While breaking it down to see if I got the 3 and 4 person rate on our room, we could not acounted for the $139.00 per person(556.00 total) Only told it was cruise fares, well it ends up being port charges(Mike you were right) we still had a separate taxes and fees on our cuise papers(360.68) so I just thought that would be it. I didn't know that there were extra fees included somewhere in my cruise costs. Anyway, I guess that's it. I'm not going to go through this TA again, was not very helpful. I'll try to find someone who is experience in cruises next time. I kinda felt like I was a nuisance to her for asking these questions.( I know I'm paying her so she should be working for me, but i don't think she knew how to ansewer my questions) So I guess I'll book the final payment tommorow. Thanks for all your information, KMBB

Donna--- If I click on to those sites that you listed, and put in my information, will my
e-mail address be free game to everyone out there, or will I get junk mail from those sites???? My husband would have a fit if we start getting junk mail from them. I'm not very good at this computer stuff and we don't want junk mail. KMBB

We just made our final pmt. and cancelled our insurance that we took through the travel agent. Our price was 254$ (Can $) for a family of 4 for a 9 day cruise and was medical & cancellation ect. When we checked with my husband's work insurance, it turned out we had adequate coverage. We've also been told to check with our Mastercard to verify our insurance coverage or up it. I don't know if this is the case in the U.S.

Hi Luv,
You should still get some travel insurance. It will cover things your regular insurance company will not, especially if you'd need to be air lifted somewhere, which can cost thousands of dollars, that is not covered. You then get additional coverage for lost luggage, missing flights. Our last cruise we had to leave due to a death in the family, pay for hotels, extra air, etc. those things will then be covered. Although I'm still waiting on payment, at least I will get it eventually. So, I would re-think getting some insurance from any of the many independent travel insurance companies.

In the State of Florida agencies MUST include the price of fees and taxes or 'uncommissionable fees' in the advertising price. I think all states should require it as it gives a much more realistic cost of the cruise. I don't know who your agent is and they might be good people and honest but what you went through is one of the reasons it is better to go through a cruise only or cruise specialist agent. The people that we allow to advertise on this website have all passed that test of being knowledgeable, legally albe to sell in all 50 states, and registering very few complaints. (Everyone gets some complaints but the number and how they resolve them is what counts to us)

Actually, our insurance plan from work covers the cost of flying us back home for medical care(it is cheaper for them to bring us back to Canada where Medicare is free).
In terms of flight, we are driving to our port so we don't need it.

Hi Luv,
If you have some kind of emergency and have to be airlifted to a close island, no, your regular insurance will not cover the cost of that, and its very expensive. Hopefully you will not need any assistance, but its nice to have the extra coverage and the price isn't too terrible either. The insurance will also cover the cost of lost luggage, yes, cruiselines do from time to time, misplace or even lose luggage. If for some reason you had a family emergency before the cruise and ended up having to cancel, the travel insurance would cover this as well.

Hi Donna,
Looked into coverage and we are covered for a million $, however we were told they prefer once stable to fly us back. As for the luggage, you are correct, we are not covered for that.

Luv,
Yes, our regular insurance will cover medical care and even the travel insurance will only pay for what the regular insurance doesn't, we had a claim for that last year and the travel insurance did pay the parts the other didn't. If you are on the ship in the middle of the ocean and need to get to a hospital and they send a helicopter for you, our regular insurance doesn't cover any of that and that can cost thousands of dollars, or if you have some emergency before the cruise and you can't go, again, thats where the travel insurance will kick in, otherwise you loose all that money, once you are 60 days before the cruise.

We just were on a cruise and had to leave, due to a death in the family, had a lot of extra expenses to get home and if we didn't have any travel insurance, you'd be out all that.

In most cases, you won't need it, but the one time you don't have it you will, guess its Murphy's law, I just get it for peace of mind, things do happen and have. Last year my husband got hurt while in Grand Cayman, we almost missed the ship, and would have if they didn't wait until they released him from the hospital, so we had a lot of medical bills, and expenses plus a deductable and when our insurance did pay, there was still a lot that didn't, so I sent it all into CSA and they paid the rest. Now, this time, I'm still waiting for some money back, it isn't going as smooth as it did the last time, but I should get some money back shortly, you also have to keep all your bills, statements that you paid for the cruise and air tickets, etc....For $100 or so for the insurance, its well worth it.

Have a great cruise!
