Default Payment Plan?

We're getting ready to book our next cruise - and the travel agent says we need $250 down. And the balance has to be paid about 70 days before the trip. Can we make some payments along the way - or do we have to wait until that last payment date for the entire balance?

Thanks very much

Joyce

I would open a special bank account and deposit a set amount into each week until final payment is due. That way you can keep you rmoney in your control in case something happens and earn a little interest.

Yes, you can pay any amount along the way, but I do what Darcy suggested - keep a "cruise account" so the money earns some interest and then pay the balance off on the due date. Of course sometimes it's hard keeping my hands off that money!

thanks... that's a possibility...
My biggest concern - there's always SOMETHING coming up - some unforeseen event - that IF the money is there, you feel a need to take care of it. If the money has already been paid - you can't spend what you don't have

But we may go that route anyway - and hope we can leave it lay there in the account.
It's a LONG time until next spring.

I also HIGHLY recommend paying the deposit and final payment with a credit card

If anything goes wrong with the booking you can contest the charge. If you give an agent your own check or cash you are relying on the agent to pay the cruise line. If for some reason they don't, your money is LOST.

WE PUT A LITTLE EACH MONTH ON A CREDIT CARD WE PAY IN FULL. THAT WAY WE ALSO GET THAT % BACK AND FEEL LIKE IT'S A REBATE.

A very good discipline to learn is never to pay any bill before you have to, but never to be late either. Credit card companies and other vendors absolutely hate people who do this, because it beats them at their own game (they actually call us "deadbeats," in an ironic reversal of the word's meaning).

If you must open a separate account in order to keep the funds separate, then by all means do so. As you become comfortable with earmarking money and controlling impulse spending, you won't need to do this; you'll just keep a paper or mental note of what money is for what purpose.

Learning how to do this is a big step on the road to financial freedom.
