We have a question about doing Dunn's River Falls on our own. Is it safe to take a cab directly from the pier? We have communicated with Peat Taylor, who is highly recommended, but his tour includes all kinds of stops (Fern Gully ect.). We have a young child with us and really don't want to make it a long day and would like to go only to the Falls and then back to the pier. Peat said he can arrange this, but through another driver. Considering this, we are wondering if it would be cheaper to simply arrange things on our own when we get there. It is only 15$ to get into the falls, not sure how much driver would be. If anyone has done this before, please let us know how it went. Also, if anyone has been at the pier & can tell us what it is like & if it is possible to get a tour directly to the Falls. We have been to Jamaica before, though not on a cruise, but we have a little idea of what the locals are like. Ofcourse, our upmost concern is for safety and reliability (getting back to the ship). Thanks for any info you may have.
The taxi's charge about $5pp to go to the falls and back. Pay them when they dilever you back to the ship and not before and make sure they agree to that arrangement. How young is the child anyway? If under 8 you might seriously consider not doing the falls with him/her as someone that young can't reach some of the steps they need to be able to to climb up. Just a suggestion. You also do not want to leave them alone following you up the falls unless someone is with them. Anyway, yes it is fine to do this and will save you some money but understand the driver will try very hard to talk you into a longer tour when you get back on his taxi. <VBG> I might suggest Margaritaville near the pier as well as they have a nice beach and shopping etc and it is within easy walking distance on the same street as the pier.
