Default Letter of consent from other parent

This will be my fourth cruise just me and my boys. I have had a letter from their mother each time and was never asked for it. Of course, we have the same last names and it was always on RCI. There is nothing in the cruise docs specific to it. I am their dad and they live with me half the time. Anyone have the latest word on this? I can get a letter no problem but don't think it should be required. On the other hand, I would not want to be turned away at the pier.

Dave

I think it all depends on who's checking you in. I get the letter every time as it's no problem as my ex and I get along. I've cruised RCL and Carnival. Have been asked for it by both lines, but not every time. I'd get it just in case. JMO

Dave--never had this situation but I would suggest getting the letter anyway, JUST IN CASE. It would really stink if you got turned away at the pier. Your boys would be bummed out. I do daycare in my house and always have the parents update my letter of consent in case there is a serious problem.

Besides, the rest of us are waiting to see you in your new speedo and thong. <VBG>

Pictures are forthcoming. In fact I went and bought a new digital camera. I entered a drawing at the camera store for a free dig camera and I won. Now I have two Nikon Coolpix cameras. The 3700 and the 4600. I am still learning how to use them.

Dave,
The letter is required and while they don't ask for it every time you can bet your bottom dollar the fortune fairy will hit you between the eyes and the first time you don't have it they will ask for it and not let you take them onboard without it. Get the letter and ya'll have a great time!

Is this letter required if I have full custody of the children? I am going to check with carnival and make sure before my cruising date( Aug 12th) but wanted some input from the cruisers here....thanks!

Good evening,
The letter is ALWAYS required, in theory and in law, irrespective of custodial
arrangements.
Best way is to get it ALL THE TIME; saves the one potential situation when
you are asked for it, have not got it....and end up not having a vacation either....
Like a passport: you never go wrong with one....it is the best I D form there is.

Cheers
CG

Well, I have the letter now and will see if they ask for it. It is the generic one I found on this site and seems to apply to when someone other than the parents are taking your kids. But it should suffice.

Dave - just make sure it is notarized. I will take it one step further, my DH and i each had to sign a form stating that we were taking our son with us on our cruise, last year, and when we checked-in, the agent asked for it. I thought it was a bit ridiculous when our TA told us about this.

Yes, it was. You were with your husband and the kid was both of yours and they wanted a letter that said you could cruise with the kids and you were both there??? That is ridiculous.

Dave, that is exactly how we felt about it. Our TA felt the same way, but she said it was an added security feature, to prevent someone from pretending that they were a child's parents taking the child out of the country.

If you have ID's, birth certs and you are the parents how can you pretend? The only thing that makes me curious is that kids under 16 don't need a picture ID. How do they know that is the kids represented on the birth cert? I realize passports will be needed soon and do have a picture. I have their YMCA cards and their City Of St Pete Rec center cards. They do know this is the 4th time we have cruised together on RCI but I guess customs can be a separate issue from the cruise line policies.

We went in the Platinum and Diamond line with no wait while there were hundreds of people in the other line. They did not ask for the letter. I presented my DL and our birth certs and we were onboard.
