Default Anyone taken a Cruise-arranged flights from West Coast to Mi

I originally posted this question on the RCCL forum, but then realized it probably applied more broadly:

We are booking a cruise for Christmas week that leaves out of Miami at 5 p.m. We will be flying in from LA, and the airfare that the cruise line quoted us is about the same as what we could get commercially ourselves for that time of year. But the cruise line won't tell us what flight they will be booking us on.

Has anyone booked their flight from the West Coast to Miami through the cruise line? If so, what kind of flight did you get? The early morning flights from LA to Miami don't arrive until 2:45 p.m., which would seem to be cutting it awfully close. On the other hand, we don't want to be taking a red-eye flight and getting in at 5:00 a.m. or something. If that were the case, we'd rather get our own flights and arrive the night before.

Does anybody know what the typical cruise arrangements are for flights from LA or other West Coast cities?

You can get anything from a direct flight to being routed all over the country. The cruise lines buy up space and if they give you 2 or 3 stops along the way, as long as it is the cheapest way of getting you there, that is what you will get. If the prices are the same or very close, I definitely suggest you book your own flights and save yourself the worry. Go in the night before to give yourself some cushion in case of mechanical or weather delays.

The direct flights arriving approx 2.45pm are not a good solution for
you and I doubt the cruise lines would put you on that; it is cutting way way way too
close, specially in winter months.

You're BY FAR better off to that such a flight THE DAY BEFORE....and eliminate any
stress arising from late arrivals; it is defenitely worth the extra night hotel to allow
you to have a pleasant, fun-filled and relaxing cruise,...ALL of it. There is the
extra advantage of checkin-in early on the cruise: you paid the $$$, max-out your stay !!!
You can be on board right around noon-ish; take in lunch in the buffet, check out the
'' lay of land '', then unpack.....all of that before the masses even start arriving. You start
drawing benefits from your cruise investments at the earliest possible time.

If, for whatever reasons, an extra night in Miami is out of the question, then you would
have to bite the bullet and red-eye your way East; you will be bagged when you get on
board the ship but at least, an early check-in is still within reach; and any flight delay-generated stress level is minimized.

Have a super cruise

Please consider flying in the day before. Especially in December. You could be delayed somewhere along the way and miss the ship. The peace of mind is well worth another day off work and the cost of a hotel room.

since you said that you could do it on your own, for about the same as the cruise line, do it and fly in the night before. The cruise lines buy the cheapest routes they can find, you could have 2-3 layovers, it can be a real pain.
