What is the likelihood that one would receive a free upgrade on a RCCL sailing? We are booked on an Oct sailing in a family oceanview cabin..but would love the royal family suite. Don't want to pay the difference as it would be double.. but wonder if the rooms don't fill up if you think they would upgrade anyone?
An upgrade like that at the pier would be almost impossible. Those cabins fill up quickly and most likely occupied by that time. You can call your travel agent closer to the cruise and see if they have any available and at what price, sometimes you can upgrade for a small price, doesn't hurt to ask...I just wouldn't think an upgrade like that would be possible at the pier, but you can always ask there too.
Usually upgrades at the pier aren't a great deal anyway. Often you are offered an upgrade that costs the difference between what you paid and the going rate for the higher category cabin. You can ask, though, because occasionally we do read on these boards about a great deal someone got. Ask a day or two into the cruise as well... once the cruiseline has confirmed that "no shows" are not going to show up at the first port they can release those cabins. Maybe you can get a good deal then.
your chances of an upgrade from and oceanview to a royal suite for no cost to you are basically slim to none. You might get a one or two catagory upgrade for no cost but not usually that big of a jump. It is possible, but not likely, don't get your hopes up, be happy with the accomodations that you have booked.
The scenario you are asking about would be one of the best upgrades of all time and one that has very little chance of happening.
Staci and Donna have given you some good advice to try and make something happen, otherwise the best way to get the Family Royal Suite would be to pay for the upgrade. I know that is cost prohibitive. Just remember, you'll be eating the same food, seeing the same shows and enjoying all of the other things on the ship that the FRS does.
