Okay, a few weeks ago I asked a question about CruiseCompete.com, got a decent response on the board and ended up saving a lot of money on a Caribbean cruise scheduled for late spring. Thanks. Now I have another first-time cruiser question. When and how much do I tip on a cruise? I saw a USA Today article on the subject, but every line is different. Why? Article referenced a cruise tip calculator - found it online and its pretty easy to use, but not sure if its legit. Does everyone on a ship get tipped? I feel like I'm giving the money I just saved right back? Any suggestions?
You can plan on tipping $10.00 per day, per passenger and there are those little extras. If you should order room service, you'd tip the person who brings it a few dollars and when you arrive at the pier, I'd tip the porters there a few dollars per bag. If you do any excursions, that would also require some tipping, but figure the $10.00 a good guideline that can be adjusted up or down, depending on the level of service you receive.

Like Donna said, plan on $10/dd/pp, couple of $ for room service, $1/bag to the porters, couple $ for the tour guides/bus drivers, some tip the children's staff if they are happy with their services. On our HAL cruise, ice cream and sundae makings were served 3pm and 11pm every day and all 6 of us (adults-lol) were there and got to know the staff. We definately tipped them!! Another cruise, our asst waiter worked in the lido during breakfast so we sat at her station always and tipped her extra for special serivce.

Alex: Don't feel like you are giving the money you saved right back. You are still ahead of the game. You would still have to tip even if you hadn't found a good deal on the cruise fare. I always just figure the tipping into my cruising budget. Donna is correct that a good rule of thumb is $10.00 per day per person sailing.
