Default Tips & Taxi costs

Help...we are trying to budget for the smaller costs of our vacation that always seem to add up to be more than expected. I have been able to figure some of the costs from reading online but hope you experienced travelers can help me fill in the blanks. Taxi fares and tips don't sound like much until you multiply them times four passengers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the ones we know from Royal Caribbean’s web site:

Room attendant $98.00
Waiter $98.00
Asst. Waiter $56.00
Head Waiter $21.00

$273.00 total

Porter tips: 10 bags x $1.50 = $15.00 each time

Atlanta Airport $15.00
San Juan Airport $15.00
Ship – embarkation $15.00
Ship – disembarkation $15.00
San Juan Airport $15.00

$75.00 total

And here are the ones we don’t:

Taxi Fares

San Juan (Pan American Dock)
Airport to ship: $
Ship to Old San Juan: $
Old San Juan to Ship: $

St. Thomas
Ship to Red Hook $
Ferry to Cruz Bay $
Taxi to Cinnamon Bay $
Taxi return to Cruz Bay $
Ferry to Red Hook $
Taxi to ship $

St. Maarten Ship excursion in morning (America’s Cup – Any tips expected there?), Afternoon taxi rates?

Antigua Taxi to Dickenson Bay $
Taxi to English Harbor $

St. Lucia Cosol’s Taxi Tour: $160.00 for the tour. (do you also tip the tour operator? I would think so, but not sure how much since it’s his taxi company)

Barbados Silver Moon Catamaran (Tips, if any?).
Local taxi rates ? $

San Juan
Ship to airport $

I know we seem like greenhorn travelers and that’s most likely because we are (most of our vacations before this have been driving to visit family). I apologize for the long post but maybe it will also help others figure out where all the cash disappears over the week.

Thanks…..

St. Thomas - go to www.vinow.com for the taxi & ferry rates & times.
St. Maarten - on the dutch side - take the water taxi - its like $5.00 per person for unlimited trips, its a short walk from the cruise ship pier to the water taxi and the water taxi puts you downtown. We don't usually tip the driver if we are going a ships excursion- they are under contract..
Tipping the head waiter is a very toucy subject. He is paid Very Well, but he really doesn't do a whole lot of hands-on work in the dining room, unlike your wait-team.- its a personal call. We also usually end up tipping the Asst. waiter more than suggested because they do all the work at your table.

Default One island down....

Thanks Lisa! That link helped me fill in the blanks for our first stop. It seems a hefty price for basic transportation, but it's still cheaper than booking an equivalent cruise tour through RCCL.

St. Thomas
Ship to Red Hook $40.00
Ferry to Cruz Bay $20.00
Taxi to Cinnamon Bay $28.00
Taxi return to Cruz Bay $28.00
Ferry to Red Hook $20.00
Taxi to ship $40.00

Total: $176.00
($44.00 per person)

Thanks also for the tip on the head waiter. We felt that way as well and have read here that the Asst. Waiter does the lion's share of the work, so we reallocated the budget as $60 to the Asst. Waiter and $15 to the head waiter.

we use the cruise lines tipping amount as a general guideline, a good place to start.
another tip: in St. Thomas - if you have plenty of time to kill when you get back from St. John and want to save some money on taxi fares, take t he local "buses", they are basically the same open-air jitney type vehicles that you will ride in on St.John. You have to go outside the fence at Red Hook and try to catch them as they make their rounds. It takes about twice as long to get back to the pier but the cost is like $2.00 per person from Red Hook to Havensight.
