Default Last minute cruises

What is the recomended way to get a cruise at the last minute? A couple months ago on Friday I tried to book a cruise leaving Saturday or Sunday out of the LA area. There were 3 or 4 with the right timeframe, I called the cruiselines involved and all were booked solid. Should I have called the travel agents instead? Is it a seasonal thing? Was I unlucky? Or is it rare that you can get a cruise a day in advance? I'd like to know if this is an option next time I am at loose ends for a week or two.

I believe they require a minimum of 72 hours for security reasons. A couple of months ago it was Spring Break for a few weeks so that's why they were probably sold out. I think in your situation, calling the cruiseline is your best bet.

I think its now rare for a cruise to still have cabins available at the last minute, and as Teresa pointed out the final manifests have to be turned in 72 hours prior to sailing. Prices are still low enough that most ships are sailing full. Lately, I've found I do my best by booking either really early, or waiting until just after final payments are made. More cabins become available then and, depending on how may there are, the cruise lines sometimes will start to discount them to sail with a full ship.
