Default photography - shooting thru glass, etc

I was wondering...how does everyone get those great shots from train / plane rides in Alaska? Do you have a UV filter on the camera in order to shoot thru glass? Also, do you set the camera to shoot at a hight shutter speed when on a train?

If you shoot at an angle - rather than straight on - you have a better chance of getting a good picture without glare. Of course, with digital cameras, you can take lots and lots of shots and pick the good ones that come out.
