Default reputable travel agency

Is there a way to check out a travel agency? I recently received a quote for a cruise that seems to be too good to be true. I have checked with the BBB, and the agency is a member of CLIA AND IATA. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It sounds like the agency has all of the correct credentials. Just make sure that port fees and taxes are included in that "true good to be true" price and that you are happy with the cabin category it is for.

Thanks for your reply. The price was quoted as including all charges, and we have placed three cabins on hold, and we have been notified of the cabin numbers. The price quoted was for inside cabins, but still $400 pp for a 7 day cruise is a great price. Thanks again.

Its all about how you feel when dealing with this agency? Did you do the transactions via phone or computer? Go to the agency if you can, meet your agent in person, put a face to the name, and visa-versa. If your agent gets to know you in person, it can make a huge difference. Was your agent very open, and helpful, or did you have to pry the information from her/him? A good travel agent is worth their weight in gold.

Mary Lou is correct in that the quote should include all costs:

Cabin (Including category):
Port Charges:
Taxes:
Government Taxes:
Additional Fees: (if any)

Clarify with the agent that these are the final charges before booking. If anything smells funny, don't book until you are comfortable and don't be afraid to walk away. It's better to hurt an agents feelings than your own

Once booked make sure that all charges are made to The Cruise Line and pay by credit card.

Also make sure you receive a booking number as soon as you receive your confirmation number. Your confirmation number is often the same as your booking number. Verify this by doing your online registration with the cruise line ASAP.

There are a number of good deals on Caribbean cruise right now so you can take advantage of them but don't let someone take advantage of you.

Have a wonderful cruise.
Mike

The cruise is on the Norwegian Spirit round trip from New Orleans, scheduled for November 25, 2007-December 2, 2007.

Hi rescuedad,

For a short cruise (3 or 4 days) you probably won't get much from a TA.

For a 7+ day cruise you might get some OBC or a "gift" from a TA, along with other services.

A good TA can "run interference" for you if you have a problem. Keep in mind that a TA doesn't cost YOU anything. They get a commission from the cruise line.

(No, I'm not a TA, I just have a good one!)

As Mike said, be sure you're comparing "apples to apples" and your payment should be by your credit card to the cruise line, not to the TA!

Thanks for the info Fern! I really have a lotta fun researching and planning my vacations. I usually start months in advance and it sort of becomes my hobby pre vacation. I like to find the best deals and put together my own packages. I actually Put together a ski trip to park city last year for 4 days of skiing leaving from florida that included air, Car, 2 BR condo, and lift tickets all divided by 4 people. Got the price down to $642pp. Anyone who goes on this type of trip could tell you thats a deal!! I knew a guy at work who was trying to put together a similiar trip for a bunch of people and he was telling everyone $1200pp after helping him out I got that price down to $880 PP for him! including upgrading his car and lodging! Maybe when I retire I'll be a TA it's lots of fun!
