I am a newby and plan on taking my family on a cruise the week before christmas. Two boys 14-17.I am overwhelmed by all the info out there. I know I want carribean but ships are confusing me. I like the idea of freestyle.Any of you expeienced cruisers can give me your advice? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks kindly!

kimjovi - the best advise is to use a travel agent. You need to act on it now, if you want to sail this year, holiday time is very popular for cruising, and you could also have a hard time finding air (if needed)
Sail on a large ship- more to do.
You mentioned "Freestyle" dining - that is NCL, but Princess offers something very similar in their "Anytime Dining"
Royal Caribbean is a very family friendly line but they do not offer the flexible dining options unless you choose the alternative surcharge restaurants.

kimjovi - I am not an exprienced cruiser, but our cruise with NCL was free style, and we liked it very much. As LisaK mentioned, the anytime dining on Princess and other lines are about the same thing as free style.
We liked not having to eat at the same time, same table, same people every time we dined.

We are taking an Alaskan cruise with HAL and they have anytime dining.

LisaK is right, better book now. Our Alaskan cruise is June 2007, We booked last month, and the ship only had 11 cabins left.

I have been on 6 Carnival cruises and just returned from my first royal caribbean cruise. Both of these cruise lines were excellent. If you go with one of the newer ships in either line, there is so much to do. My brother is 16 and totally enjoyed the rock climbing wall, mini golf, and game room on board the explorer of the seas. The atmosphere on both lines are great too. Very festive and carefree! Hope this helps.
