Default planning a cruise

HI ,
What is the best way to book a cruise? We have booked through a travel agent in the past and are thinking of other options. We also planning a trip with some of our family so any suggestions on booking a family trip?
THanks
Brooke

Hi Ruth,
I stil value a good travel agent when booking a cruise. I always know the exact ship I want to book along with the date, so its easy for the agent. If there should be any problems, and or changes, its wonderful to have an agent to call and help with issues that come up between the booking and the actual cruise.

There is one or two I like to use all the time, e-mail and I can give you that information if you want.

I agree with Donna. A good travel agent is worth his/her weight in gold, especially if you are booking a group such as a family cruise.

I totally agree with the ladies. A good travel agent is a keeper, especially when dealing with a group.

If you're booking a family cruise, I would definitely recommend working with a reputable travel agent. Also, one member of the family should be designated to serve as coordinator to represent the entire group. Do your homework as far as ships, destinations, etc., gather everyone's information needed for booking, i.e., name as it appears on Passport/birth certificate, address, telephone number, deposit information, etc. Using a family representative will simplify the information process between the family, T.A. and cruise line. I always serve as the coordinator for my family and enjoy the responsibility.

The only other options are directly through the cruise line. You can book a cruise through an online booking engine, but that is still using a travel agent.

We have SO many good articles about cruise buying - please go to our "consumer affairs" are here:

http://www.cruisemates.com/articles/consumer/

and read "how to book online" "picking a travel agent" and "understanding cruise line ads"

Thank you for the suggestions! We were hoping to save a few dollars by booking the cruise directly through the cruiseline. What about airfare? What is the best and economical way to book it?

Booking directly through the cruise line is not the most economical way to do it. Use a cruise agent who specializes in cruises and is a MCC. (Master Cruise Consultant) They can answer your questions, help if anything goes wrong and assist you in other areas where a cruise line agent probably won't.

Take care,
Mike

Mike is totally correct. Travel agents- especially cruise travel experts have access to certain professional courtesys that are not available to the general public.
Book your air independantly - your TA can do that for you.

I agree with the previous posters, our TA is VERY good, he knows what we want and like, and will spend HIS time on the phone if there is a problem.

Also, I prefer a TA with a PHYSICAL address, not someone who is in cyber-space, and I can only wait for them to answer my emails at their convenience! Still stuck in the old world in certain situations, I guess..

Have a GREAT cruise!!

I'm very happy being "stuck in the old world"! IMHO, there's nothing better than a TA who actually knows you! When I email my TA I get an answer within an hour! A good TA is worth their weight in gold!
