Default airline-personal item

Can a backpack be a personal item on Continental? I'm trying to decide between an open tote & a backpack. I'll haVe another carry-on suitcase.
Thanks,
Tammy

If it's a full size back pack, no doubt they'll make you treat it as checked luggage.

Some of the smaller backpacks would be considered like purses/personal items.

I've recently flown on Continental with a legal sized roll-aboard suitcase, and a pretty good sized, over stuffed backpack. No questions asked. I almost always fly with a backpack counting as my personal item. I try to look as "unencumbered" as I can when boarding, and never put more than one of my carry on items into the overhead bin.

I think enforcement of the rule mostly depends on the size of the plane, and whether the flight is completely booked or not. Although I might fudge on the "size" of the allowed personal item, I try not to intrude on other's space, keeping the back pack under the seat in front of me.

Thanks. I got through to their baggage question line. They said if it met the dimensions I could count it as personal & still have another bag. I hope so or I'll be repacking at the airport.

When I carry-on luggage I generally bring a backpack, purse and carry-on suitcase. When it's time to board the plane I shove my purse into the backpack so there is technically only 1 personal item.
