Default Labadee

Is one required to only partake in RCCL beach experience at Labadee?
I was wondering if there is the possibility of seeing a town nearby. I know Haiti is very poor. What are the possibilities of getting away from the beach party?

Labadee is an isolated peninsula of Haiti, and access is limited to cruise ship passengers and staff of the cruise line, and vendors.

You cannot leave the area, but you can go and relax on the beach, and plenty of space to walk around, and other activities available.

We loved Labadee, but would not want to leave the beach area even if permitted. Haiti is a very dangerous place, as evidenced by the armed guards present everywhere. The vendors are limited to two controlled areas and do not meet the tenders like they did years ago.
The fence is very high and heavily guarded, also.
There is a school nearby, though with small children. The day we were there in Jan. '02 on our first cruise, the teachers brought the children down to the beach area dressed in their best clothes to thank the Explorer of the Seas staff for providing Christmas gifts for them on a previous visit. They came from the opposite direction of the fence.
We were disappointed in Jan. '03 that it rained the whole day we were stopped at Labadee and we didn't get to spend any time there.
