Default Caribbean in the summer?

Has anyone cruised the Caribbean, Bahamas or Virgin Islands in the summer? Is it unbearably hot or not as bad as you would think? I believe the sun is stronger in the summer and more care needs to be taken not to burn-am I correct?

I've cruised in Sept. a few times and while its plenty warm, you'll notice a bit more humidity than earlier in the year. Yea, the sun is something to be careful of anytime you are in the Caribbean.

We sailed in September last year. This was the first time we sailed at any time other than winter. It was a bit more humid, but it wasn't unbearable. We had a very nice time. One thing I did notice was that the seas were the calmest that we ever had.

Dear Carribean Gal,

My family and I sailed last July to the Carribean and we are sailing again this July and it really is not that bad. Just make sure that you put sunscreen on. I say that the temps. are about 85.

If you go on shore excursions, just bring bottles of water with you, so you don't get dehydrated. Have a great cruise and don't worry be happy. 8) 8)

Showcat,
No, you won't get flamed...that only happens here on cruise boards.
But, DO take bug repellant and sun screen. You can get sunburned in a heartbeat in the Caribbean summer. Even a very literally black friend of mine from Jamaica said he had to use sunscreen. Now, Jamaicans do have a great sense of humor, but he wasn't kidding.
And, yes, the bugs can be even more aggresive than the local vendors. I like Cutter's repellant in foil wrapped wipes. Fit into a pocket and can be applied if I need it. I hate getting all covered in "stuff" just in case.
Re. clothing, I have a very old, thin man's shirt that I tie around my waist over a tank top. Can protect myself from bugs or sun instantly that way.

Default Sunwash or Sunsafe

This reminds me there is a very good product one can find in the laundry deparrtment usually right next to the RIT clothing dye, Walmart carries it. You wash your clothes with it and it adds a temporary Sun block that lasts through several washings. I think it was called Sunsafe or Sunwash. One can also buy clothing with it built in sunblock at better sporting good stores such as REI, but they are expensive. Your right a thin long sleeve is best to have to prevent burning.

I'll have to look for that product. Thanks for the tip!
I did invest in one of the sunblock shirts a few years ago. They have probably improved by now, but that one was so heavy and hot that I found myself not wearing it.

I have been to the Caribbean in every season. Summer is hotter, especially if you are not used to the heat. I live in TX so I am a little more acclimated to the high temps. Is it unbearable? No, I don't think so. If you're a beach bum or a water sports lover, you might like the warmer water temps. If you like to sightsee and shop, you are gonna sweat, so drink plenty of water, and take it slow.
