Default Driving from Boston to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal

We are sailing on the Crown on 6/8. There are 5 of us and we are from Boston. Princess offers bus service from Boston to the Brooklyn cruise terminal but I was thinking about renting a mini van and driving myself with the whole crew. The rental car return agency in on E12th street in Manhattan so I would drop everyone at the port, return the car and cab it back. The reason this is appealing is because we could most likely leave the city earlier when we get back…the bus back to Boston does not leave until around noon. My question for you is it a pain to drive to the port? Does the Manhattan pick up and drop off sound problematic? Am I making myself crazy with all of this…I forget whose motto was “leave the driving to us?.?
