Default Planning for an Extended Cruise

We're planning on booking an around South America cruise (Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco). The entire trip will be about 7 weeks. We've cruised before, but never more than a couple of weeks. Any hints or thoughts on planning for a long trip would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Most important things to consider our pets, house, mail, and finances. The last is actually the easiest as it is now possible to pay almost all bills online. Prior to departure, set up all your credit cards to pay online. Ensure ability to transfer funds between accounts as necessary, and use billpay for your bills (e.g., utilities) that will still come in while you are gone.

If you have pets, you will undoubtedly need a house sitter/pet sitter. If no pets, just close up your house for the season. I couldn't tell where you live. If in Florida, you don't have to really worry about frozen pipes so no winterization. If up north, make sure your house is winterized. It would still be good for a family member or neighbor to check on the house.

US postal service will only hold mail for 30 days so you need to figure out where to forward your mail. Again, a friend or family member comes in handy. If not, you either need to make a deal with your local post office or forward mail to one of thos private boxes (e.g., MailBoxes...) and make an agreement for them to hold the mail. Obviously, a family member works best.

Check with your insurance company, if your cars are going to stay garaged, about suspending some of your coverages to save some money. Just make sure everything is reinstated by the first time you want to use the cars.

Hope this helps. If so, I expect a thorough report on your cruise as we are planning a South America circumnavigation in a few years and are looking for all the trip reports that we can.

Default We Booked today! Yay!! Now we have to wait a year and a half

Thanks for your hints. We've started a checklist even though we have lots of time. We booked today on the Carnival Splendor sailing January 31, 2009 for the back-to-back-to-back from Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco. If anyone has anymore thoughts or ideas, let us know!

I have only one suggestion check out yank sing or the stinking rose for dinner when you get to San Francisco. Yank Sing is really neat it's a dim sum restuarant the roll carts through and you pick and chose what to eat. It's a lot of fun. Stinking Rose is an italian restuarant that specializes in garlic. They have a great roasted garlic that you spread on your bread. Here is a link to yank sing http://www.yanksing.com/ and the stinking rose http://www.thestinkingrose.com/photos.htm Have a great trip.

you also need to think about your medications. If you are taking anything on a maintenance/regular basis you need to contact your insurance company so that they will authorize your co-pay
