When is the best time to book a cruise in June 2008?

We are planning on taking a cruise to New England and Canada in June 2008 departing from Norfolk, Virginia. I have been looking at the prices and they have pretty much stayed the same. I have noticed in the past that there are advertised specials if you are over fifty-five or live near to where the ship departs from. When do these advertized specials occur? Also, why are cruise prices so volatile as you get closer to the departure date?

Only problem with booking close to a departure date, much less cabin selection. I'd book as soon as you can, if prices do go down, you can simply ask your travel agent for the lower price.

Donna,

What if you booked directly through the cruise line? Are they willing to give you a reduced rate if the prices go down?

I only book through a travel agent, but I would think that by booking directly, they would have to honor the lower price as well.

The cruise line sets the price but depending on the line a TA may be able to beat that price with a rebate or other "perk".

Here is a link to a Cruisemates article that gives an excellent explanation on price shoppping and cruise pricing. Also read the follow up article at the end.

Take care,

Dear Mike,
Thanks for forwarding me the article about cruise prices. I have also found it better to book with a travel agent, rather than the cruiseline, because an agent is "your advocate". If an agent wants you as a repeat customer they will do everything they can to make your cruise booking and cruise vacation an enjoyable one. You will most likely tell your family and friends about how good this agent was. If on the other hand, you happen to deal with an agent that isn't your advocate, you will tell your family and friends not to book with this person! As the saying goes, "word of mouth is the best advertising".
