dressing for dinner

What is appropriate dress for dinner? We have two boys that wear mostly jeans and t-shirts. Do I need to buy them a new wardrobe just for dinner or will nice jeans work? Do they need collared shirts or would a nice "t-shirt" work also?

Sorry but jeans and t-shirts are not proper for dinner in the dining room for passengers of any age.

You don't have to go for an entire wardrobe but a couple pairs of docker type or dress slacks and a collared shirts will work.

A general rule of thumb is: The older the child, the more "dressed up" they should be.

for casual nights your boys will need a couple pairs of dockers type or cargo pants with polo or other collared shirts, depending upon the line you are sailing on plain colored or t-shirts with subtle slogans on them might be allowed.
For formal nights- a suit it prefered but dress pants, dress shirt/tie, dress shoes are fine, and again depending upon the line, a blazer or suit coat

We are on Holland America, Amsterdam. We are not doing the formal nights, getting them into what they call "dress clothes" (dockers) is apparently painful enough.
I am expecting like everything else they will be so happy to be on the cruise and will not even think about their attire.

tmbd - you might be surprised about the attitude regarding getting all dressed-up for formal night. Yes they will fuss, fume and complain, but once the outfit is complete it it amazing to see the transformation in attitude especially if there are young ladies around to impress
