Overnight in port

I have noticed that on some itineraries in Europe, the ship is shown in port for two days (usually either at the beginning or end of the cruise). Am I correct to assume that the ship is essentially a floating base of operations until either embarkation or disembarkation? Does the ship provide much for the passengers those evenings or is it primarily a chance to enjoy the nightlife in port and not worry about making it back to the ship until late?

Indeed the ship acts as a base for you as you enjoy the port, but they do have some things going on for entertainment if you decide to stay on the ship, or when you return in the evening.

Overnighting in port is wonderful. So many ports, both in Europe and other places around the world, have too much to see in one day. We are looking forward to two overnights in Venice on our Med cruise this spring. Next year, we will have two overnights in St Petersburg.

On a recent Far East cruise on HAL, we had overnighters in Shanghai, Osaka, Tokyo and the port for Beijing. Three of them were two nights. In all cases it was wonderful to have extra time to see these great cities and the sights they have to offer :!: Even with the extra time in Tokyo, we still didn't get to go to the world famous fish market there! I wish more cruise lines would do more of this.
