Default British passports

We are Canadian citizens (for 25 years) originally from England and continue to hold British passports. We have cruised yearly for the past 15 years and our citizenship card along with our passports has always been accepted without question at U.S. immigration. We returned from a 10 day Celebrity cruise on Feb. 18 and were informed that in the future we would have to have a Canadian passport, that our British one would no longer be acceptable. Is this indeed the fact and when does it go into effect?

A Canadian Citizenship card will no longer be sufficient. If you declare your citizenship as Canada you will be required to have a Canadian passport.

If you have dual citizenship then you should hold two passports.

One question: Is your British passport current?

Take care,
Mike

Yes, both our passports are still valid.

British nationals travelling under a UK passport are part of the visa waiver program, your country of residence (as long as you do not reside in the USA, then yes, you would need an Alien Registration Card aka Green card) should not even come into play. Seems to me like you were given the incorrect information. Check this link out:

What a slew of information! Thanks so much. And you're right-we keep getting conflicting info from immigration officers. It seems that Homeland Security is going to change the rules next year. We can deal with that-it's just finding out what the changes are! Thanks again for your help.
