Default Cuba how can an American visit?

Does anyone know how an American would go about visiting Cuba?

I was very impressed with their country after seeing the film Sicko. I've heard there is a boat from Mexico dubbed the worlds cheapest cruise, I know there are boats from Jamicia.

Not to be a smart @$$ but my guess would be illegally. I remember reading something not to long ago that some school kids had taken a trip there (for school) and got in a lot of trouble.
If you do find a way, please post. I would like to go there as well.

You can fly to Cuba from Canada. Many Canadians vacation in Cuba, though I haven't been yet.

I'm not sure what the legalities are as far as the US gov't is concerned. I believe you're not supposed to go there even if you can get there.

Another alternative of course would be rafts going "the other" way

You can go to Cuba from Canada, Mexico or a number of other countries.

Actually it's not "illegal" for a U.S. citizen to go to Cuba. What is illegal is to spend ANY money while you are there. That is just about impossible.

Take care,
Mike

Default Cuba

Thanks for the information, I don't think I will be able to do it this trip as it's a 2 day cruise from Mexico plus 2 days back would be 4 days I'm only in Mexico for 7, however it is something that interests me and it makes a lot more sense to go from the Caribbean then to fly all the way to Canada first location wise. I remember there were boats from Jamicia as well. I'd love to go in the future, I hope that our governments improve relationtions as Cuba would be such a perfect destination for American travel because it's so large and so close!

I,m not sure what all the legalities are, but a lot of people go through the Bahamas, from Nassau. I,ve heard that immigration doesn't stamp your passport, so there's no evidence of your travel.

The easiest way is to go through Canada and get Canadian money and use Canadian money. I heard that if you were caught there was a stiff fine for being there, but they could have been using US money.

My aunt and uncle go to Cuba almost every year (except for one year when they went to Dominican Republic). As for shopping and buying goods in Cuba, there isn't much-rum and cigars, which you can't take back with you (but you can smoke em before you leave).

I wonder, if anyone bought two cigars, one Cuban and one other if you switched the packaging or cigar bands they would know the difference?...I am not a smoker so this is just a ponderable thought.

I think it is unfortunate that you are allowing a blatant propaganda film to influence your choice of vacation destinations, however, having said that, I sympathize with your desire to visit. If the government would drop its pointless travel restriction and embargo I would go to Cuba in a second.

While chances are you could get away with a visit if you booked it through Canada as a separate trip there is also a chance that the State Department could get quite nasty about the whole thing and cost you megabucks. Only you can decide if the reward is worth the risk.

Default Cuba

I don't consider Micheal Moore's film to be blatent propoganda if I want that I would watch Fox news! I consider his films honest, as one of the millions of Americans without healthcare this subject is very dear to me. That is not the entire reason I want to visit Cuba, but I was impressed by the compassion of the people. I know that Cuba would be an interesting place with much culture. I'm certain many Americans visit there and I want to find out how it is possible, I think it's ridculas in this so called free country that we are not allowed to legally visit there, or spend money there, yet I can get on a plane to the Middle East and would be putting myself in much more danger.

Let's keep politics and propaganda out of this thread. I would hate it if a thread with useful information ended up in the Deleted Posts file.

These types of threads can easily get off track and become a bashing between folks with opposite political views.

Thanks,
Mike
