Travel time from Venice port to train station??

About how much time should be allowed for disembarkation in Venice (7:30 A.M. ship disembarkation time and we will be taking our own luggage off) for getting to the train station? We think we should pre-book our train ticket to Rome but don't know how much time to allow for getting to the station.
P.S.
Is pre-booking really necessary?
Thanks.

The train station is not that far from the port. However, you will have to take a 'vaporetto' (water bus) or hire a water taxi. IMHO you would not have to pre-book the train but if you did you could avoid the lines at the ticket wickets and have pre-selected seats.

Thank you so much for your reply. I would love to buy the tickets in advance but I keep getting mixed info from my travel agent. She says there are two train stations and one is a "must do by water taxi" and the other can be done by land. I am concerned about buying from the wrong station and also not being too sure how easily (and quickly) the water taxi can be obtained. Therefore, how do you know how to pick your train time. Any thoughts as to an approximate amount of time to allow from time of disembarkation???
Thanks a bunch!

You do not need a water bus or water taxi to get to train station. There are two train stations in Venice. Santa Lucia is very near the normal docks. Definitely walkable but you might want to take a "land" taxi.

Thanks so much for your response. I think we will just wait and buy our tickets when we get to the train station. Hopefully, it won't be a problem.

Hopefully, your cruise line offers a shuttle from the peir to Piazzale Roma. From there it's a very short walk across the new bridge to the station
