Default Walkie Talkie & Nextel

Hi,
I bought a couple of Cobra Walkie talkies, they claim 27 mile rage, but who knows. I also am thinking of getting Nextel phones with the Direct Talk feature. On Nextel, Direct Talk is a Off Network communication system with a 2 or 3 mile range.

Does anyone have any information on how either of these might work on a ship? (We will be on the Caribbean Princess 11/15) I wanted a way for all 3 of us to stay in touch while in different area's of the ship. I've heard the steel on ships can make it difficult for them to work, and I also heard that while Walkies were once popular, they aren't so now? In addition to onboard, would either Nextel's Direct Talk or the Walkies work while in port? I know the range isn't as good as they advertise, but for a few miles out I was hoping

Your walkie-talkies are probably GMRS/FRS radios. I used to use them and they worked fairly well except when one person was on an upper deck and the other on one of the lowest. Depending on the output power you may be able to overcome the ship's steel.

I'm sorry but I can't help with the Nextel question.

Take care,
Mike

We use the walkie talkies but they are somewhat limited within the confines of the ship because of the steel. They are very useful though and we can also keep in touch while the guys are on the ship and the girls are in the port shopping.

I never go on a cruise without them.

Regards,
Thomas
