Are there any beaches near the Old San Juan area cruise dock? I'm curious because I never hear of beach excursions at this port, though I know most of the time the ships dock at night.

Old San Juan is located on a heavily polluted harbor.
You probably wouldn't want to go to a beach there - even if they had one.
You need to find a beach on the ocean.
Maybe Bruce can tell us how close to old San Juan this beach is,and if it's doable in the time frame there. There are some great city tours we have taken there, if you decide to make other ports, your beach time, which may make sense, if this is a distance.
Isla Verde has the best beaches in San Juan. Narrow, barely marked paths between condominiums along Av. Isla Verde lead to the beach. The eastern side of Isla Verde has long, beautiful beaches that are most easily reached by turning toward the water at the Isla Verde Mall, then taking C. Dalia to C. Amapola to the end. Near the San Juan Hotel on the beach, Edwin’s Easy Chairs rents for $3 a day. The far eastern end of the beach, in front of the airport and the Ritz Carlton, is farther away from the amenities and shops but consequently has fewer people, smoother sand, and a more picturesque landscape.

A bit off topic, but we are visiting San Juan on a cruise this year we thought we would just wander about, is this a good/safe idea? sounds an interesting place for a bit of sightseeing & lunch ashore.
I have noticed this lack of beaches too. But I seem to remember Delft once posting that on her trip to San Juan, they got in a taxi and had it take them to a very nice beach. Sorry, but I don't remember the name of it...
John,
Old San Juan is fine for walking around during the day, shopping, catching a lunch, etc. You can even walk up to El Morro and take the scenic tour, quite something to see, and then again when you sail out of the harbor.
I really enjoy walking around San Jaun...The old city has all cobblestone streets and can be steep in some areas. On Saturdays, by the fountain, and visitors center, there used to be a craft fair..... nice place to pick up a locally made gift. There is a Hard Rock Cafe there, that you can almost walk right by, due to architectual, restrictions of the area... I have always done city tours here too, both night and day,and found very interesting.

The closest beaches to Old San Juan is probably the beaches in the Condado area, which is a short taxi ride from the piers. I don't know of any beaches in OSJ. I would think that your best bet for a beach closeby is to ask a cab driver close to the pier & explain your time constraints. We have found every taxi driver we have encountered in OSJ to be helpful & most of them are very entertaining as well.
We are doing a LOOONG Caribbean cruise so we will get "beached out" so we want to find different things to do, we have two days in New Orleans to consider too.
