I would imagine caution would be extra important here!

I think that for both you would want to be part of a group. We did canal tour in Panama with our ship but in Cartenega we found a tour at the port. They are careful about who is let in the port area ( the vehicles and people that are used for tours have to show id both coming in and going out) and found a really nice tour that took us to the fort then to Old Cartenega. The guide did give us advise as to how to handle ourselves in both areas with the street vendors and had no problem.

thank you for your imput , as we don't want to put ourselves in harms way we might just take a couple of "stay on ship" days . or find some extra moneys to book trips through the ship .

Default Stay on ship

Never having been to Colon I can't say, but many years ago we stayed for a week in Cartegena and have been back on a cruise..Yes, hire a guide, but don't miss this wonderful old city. The Old City was rehabbed after being ignored for years by the Government.. The people themselves rehabbed this beautiful old walled area and it's lovely (wonderful and excellent restaurants behind those big wooden doors)..Yes, the vendors can be aggressive, but just saying "no gracias" and moving on.. There is so much to see... our favorite being The Dungeons..little shops.in what was once a dungeon.. There is the Fort and the Church. I would go back in a heart beat...even for a week.

Yes the Old city of Cartenega is really not to be missed. I'm sure we only paid like $30 person for the tour and it was definitely something we will not forget.

Ran into an acquaintance recently and mentioned I'd be in Colon on a cruise. Been there before and they had armed guards outside the port area. At any rate, she was down there visiting relatives and said it was very dangerous. The same kind of thing can be said about Cristobal with the guards and Limon and Cartagena. Would recommend in all cases if you're going beyond the port area to take a ship's excursion.

If you can swing it, I highly recommend the ferry in Panama because you go through the other two locks (if you go through the Gatun one on Princess) all the way over to the Pacific Ocean with a fascinating view of the locks from a much smaller boat.

Yes I agree cruznut about the ferry thru the locks. It is a fantastic ride. But you have to do this thru the ship as it can take a lot longer than the announced time. When we went we were 3 hours late getting back to the ship and if it had not been a ships excursion we would have missed the ship.
