Default Itinerary change due to Egypt unrest

We are scheduled on the NCL Jade for 2/13 and are having difficulty finding out what our options are now that Alexandria - our overnight port - is off the menu. I saw that the most recent sailing went to Istanbul, but it was a last minute decision apparently. I'm flummoxed as to how we are to schedule shore excursions when we don't know where "shore" is! Any suggestions on how to pry info loose from NCL?

The kicker for us is that my 83 year old mother is taking us on this cruise because she wanted to see the pyramids before she dies (none of us believe it will be very soon, however). So now she's having anxiety attacks over it all.

since you are so close to your sailing date, i would say have your ta call the cruise line, the itineary change might even be up on the web site, your best bet is to wait until you board, see what is availabe for excursions and then head down to the excursion desk and book

I am sure the cruise lines are frantically setting up alternative excursions in a few different ports, to give their passengers choices, but, things will be fluid, till you get onboard I would bet.Saftey for passengers is the utmost of importance, and even if things change there, they may not go in, as soon as cruisers would like.

To have the Pyramids be removed from excursions, is sad for so many, who wanted to see this wonder. Let's hope Egypt's unrest will be setlled sooner than later.

Default Pryamids

TRIP.....having visited Alexandria and Cairo in October to see the Pyramids, my first reaction was for world class cities I've never seen such chaos and filth...garbage strewn streets and canals. We have spent a week in each in Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and there was nothing to even compare to the horrible conditions.. Although the Pyramids were never in my bucket list I still can't believe I've seen them and the Sphynx. I WOULD NEVER EVER GO BACK....Our second day there several passengers made the decision not to tour Alexandria. Sad, the country has much to offer. Museums are being looted and even as we toured in October there was a police presence on the tour buses which went out in caravans. Safety is the main concern of the cruise lines and it will be many years I believe until it is safe for cruise ships to return.. Oh yes... the reason we booked the cruise was because of the overnight in Israel....which overwhelmed us and whether Christian or Jewish must be seen... especially after Egypt. I believe there will be many, many changes made to itineraries at the last minute starting now and there is nothing you can do about it... Spacy-tell your mother we are as old or almost as old as she is and it just "ain't worth it"...to put your life in danger.. A few years ago Cartegena, Spain was substituted for Morocco....I'd rather have visited Cartegena, Spain.... but we did get back and went to Marrakesh two years ago..

Default Thanks for the advice

Parrot, I'll forward your response to my mom. I loved it. We have been asking NCL over and over for information and can't get anything. Our guy promises to send information and it just doesn't happen - he has flaked on us at least 3 times now. My mom is paying for it, my sister-in-law set it up, and I upgraded us from inside to a 2 bR family suite, and none of us can get a response when we call. Have tried to escalate to someone higher in customer service, but can't get past the reservations guy. We'll keep at it.
And get this - my brother says the curse of the pharaohs is upon us - my sister in law (in her early 60's) had to go in the hospital yesterday for chest pains and had to undergo a stent implant procedure!! She still plans on going on this cruise, but oh my.
It's so good to have someone out there (you guys who responded) to talk to. Only my second cruise, my mom's 8th or 9th, my sister's second, too
Virtual hugs.

I seems you booked directly with the cruise line. Next time I urge you to book with a cruise specialist..They will be your advocate, when issues arise. I wish you and your family all the best..Hoping your sister is in tip top shape, and you all make memories for a lifetime.

Ask us anything, anytime, that's what we are here for.

I can outdo your sister in law...lol.. came home from the flight and developed blood clots in my lungs, two weeks later rushed to another hospital for a stent after discovering 80% blockage. (they are not going to let her go are they-hopefully she must of bought travel insurance)... and found out that our excursions unbeknowst to be was being affected by my cardiac problems and I ended with a stent less than a few weeks later after coming home. The last thing she wants to do is end up in a hospital in Egypt or one of the other countries. We have done over 25 cruises, mainly the past few years trans-atlantics... Tell your mother I did one bucket list item two years ago... we did the Amazon, years ago Parrot Pop wanted to see when it opened up Macchu Picchu which we did..Not that your mother will appreciate it, but the Sphynx is smaller than we imagined and beat up

Spacey, keep calling, but don't call the 800 number, you are right you won't get pass the reservation agents, go to the cruise lines web site there has to be a customer service number that you can call. I am surprised that they haven't updated the itineary on the web site

This revised itinerary is posted on the NCL Homepage under News Alert:

Sun Barcelona 7:00pm
Mon Day at Sea
Tue Rome (Civ) 8:00am 7:00pm
Wed Day at Sea
Thu Athens (Pir) 10:30am 8:00pm
Fri Ephesus (Izm) 9:00am 6:00pm
Sat Istanbul 1:00pm overnight
Sun Istanbul overnight
Mon Istanbul 10:00am
Tue Day at Sea
Wed Valletta 9:00am 6:00pm
Thur Day at Sea
Fri Barcelona 5:00am

It looks like you have over two days in Istanbul. This will be wonderful alternative but it is sad to miss the pyramids. I enjoyed Egypt and while it is crowded and chaotic it is also has its beauty. It also has some of the best tasting pigeon you'll ever have.

Take care,
Mike
