Red face What time to board for best upgrade on "oceanview guarantee"?

My husband and I are going on a cruise next January, and have booked our cruise already through an Early Saver Discount. If booking an oceanview guarantee, do you think the odds of getting an upgrade is better when boarding the cruise ship early on the day of embarking? Or, would it be better to to board towards the end on the day of embarking hoping the other rooms are filled up, possibly getting bumped to balcony?

I think you misunderstand how a "guarantee" works. Rarely do you not have a cabin assignment before you arrive at the pier. You will probably be assigned a cabin right after booking or 60 to 14 days before you board.

If you don't have a cabin assignment before the day of cruising you will have one when you arrive at the pier. The cabin assignments are done "before" anyone boards and when the final manifest is prepared.

Pier upgrades are extremely rare and you will pay for an upgrade if there are cabins available on the day of the cruise.

Take care,
Mike

Booking a guarantee is rolling the dice. You could get an upgrade, that another cruiser would think, is not. You board with a cabin assignment.. More often then not, at embarkation there is a sign at the pursers desk, it says, ship is full...That is telling you, don't ask about an upgrade. Good luck.....

Thanks for the info. It's been about 10 years since I've been on a cruise, and my husband has never been on one. I'm a little "rusty" on cruising, but thought taking a chance on a guarantee room would be worth it. I didn't know they generally assigned the cabins that far in advance. Once assigned, does a cabin assignment ever change before day of embarkation?

It does happen, but generally, once the cabin is assigned it doesn't change.

Take care,
Mike

I thought with a guarantee you were not given an assigned cabin until boarding. The guarantee was for your catagory and it guaranteed a cabin at least somewhere, with a possible bump up if all cabins sold out early.

Nope, it's just as Mike stated. 99.9% are assigned before boarding. A guarantee does have a good chance of an upgrade because you are more flexible in your cabin assignment, but it would generally be done well before boarding.

Only once did I not have a cabin assigned until I reached the pier. And by then, the porters outside have a manifest and can tell you what your cabin assignment turned out to be.

Every other time I have been booked with a guarantee I've received the cabin assignment well before departure.

Once the cabin's assigned it can on occassion be changed, but generally that's not the rule.

And Mike is right... once you're at the pier if you check with the pier coordinator and request an upgrade, it's going to come with a cost if available, not free just because you are booked in a guarantee category.

We have just finished a cruise we booked in April 2009, we had a cabin allocated then...not a guarantee but it was allocated then.
