Bermuda With Minor

I will be cruising to Bermuda with my 13 year old son. Wondering what documentation will be required to enter Bermuda. My son has a different last name than I do. I would think that if I have his passport, a letter from his Dad, and his birth certificate, I should be okay. I assume I will also need all these things just to get on the ship.

If I recall from my trips with a child with a different last name, the letter from the other parent needed to be notarized. Things may have changed though (my 'child' is 27 now)...

Make sure you get good info on this and don't just take our word on it. It would be awful to hit a red-tape snag at check-in time.

I would suggest this notarized documentation.... may or may not be asked for, but better to be prepared.

Glad to help and hope it offers some assistance.

Have a great cruise !

Well, I just got back from having a document signed and notarized. Will also bring a copy of his birth certificate, so should be all set.

Yeppers.....you should be good to go now and you do not need to take the birth certificate off the ship when in Bermuda...just your boarding card and photo ID for anyone 16 years and older...under 16 years of age, no photo ID needed to debark or embark ship while in Bermida, but you may want to bring that notarized document with you when leaving the ship, just in case you are asked for it.

Have a GREAT cruise !

PS... looks like the minor child has a passport and that "trumps" a BC and BC is really not necessary at all. Some will encourage you to carry passports off the ship, some will say bring a copy of passport when off the ship in a port of call..... really your call on this. I would just follow what the cruiseline suggest in your daily paperwork provided to you with suggestions and requirements of what is needed when debarking ship.

Well, the birth certificate is to prove that I am his Mother, since we have different last names.

Actually, the cruise line gave me incorrect information. They didn't think I needed a letter signed by his Dad. Just the BC and passport. Luckily I am the type to do research on my own.

if he has a passport, birth certificate isn't necessary. If you share custody with his dad then a signed, notarized letter with your name, his name your son's name, date of sailing, ships name and destination is what you will need

ArabianHorseLover July 5th, 2011 09:17 AM

The passport does nothing to prove that I am his Mother. I need the birth certificate for that.

Bring the birth certificate....cover all the bases......relax.....have a great cruise with yor son !

thanks for this info, i always thought that all you need to travel would be a passport and the letter of consent, better off to be prepared with all documentation

ArabianHorseLover July 6th, 2011 10:16 AM

Well, that should be all you need if the child has the same last name as yours.
