Smile Fantasy @ Destiny

I was over on Carnivals web site looking at there diffrent ships when I noticed that there Fantasy class ships are 855 feet long and 70,367 tons while the Destiny class is 893 feet long and 101,353 tons. I was just wondering why there is such a diffrence in the tonnage while the ships are so close in length?

Yep you were right theres 2 more decks on the one ship. You would think that they would of put a couple more decks on the other ship so they could get more people on there!;-)

Gross Registered Tonnage has very little direct relation to the length of a ship.
The GRT is best a reflection of the interior volume of a ship.

Tall/wide ships often have much higher GRT than long ships.

The Norway was the longest ship in the world for many years at just over 1,000 feet.
But her tonnage was well under 100,000 tons.

The Oasis/Allure at around 1,100 feet in length are 220,000 tons each.

Interesting so is it fair to say that a ships tonnage is like her square footage. I just asummed it was her actual weight. not her volume.
