Default Cabin Price Adjustment

I am asking your advice on this subject. I booked a cruise in January 2017 for October 2018 and paid 10% deposit; in December 2017 I was surprised to find that the cruise in question was no longer listed on the company's website; I contacted the company and they advised that the original sailing date had been canceled and I could book on a later sailing, which I did - the original deposit was applied to the new sailing date (no price adjustment was made). I now find on their website that the cabin price I had originally been invoiced for is now advertised at $500 less than the price for the earlier sailing (not a special promotion) - is the cruise company obligated to revise my cabin rate to the new advertised rate?

First of all, this is one of the major reasons why you never want to book directly with the cruise company. It's very important to book with a reputable agent, preferably a Cruise Specialist. Had you done this, the agent would have notified you right away of the cancellation and helped you find another option. Plus, if the price goes down before the final payment due date, they will get the price reduction for you. The cruise line will not do that.

With all that said, call the cruise line's reservation department and tell them you found the price less that what you're currently paying and they should reduce the price of your cruise. However, sometimes the current advertised special may be 'for new bookings only'. Now it will depend on the cruise line, as some are better than others at doing this. Again, this is where an agent can be very helpful, as we have contacts not available to you and sometimes we can get things done that you can't.

So, if the reservationist says you can't do that, tell them you want to talk to a supervisor. Not knowing the cruise line or the exact situation, it's tough to give you a specific answer to your question, as there are too many variables.

Keep in mind that almost all reservationists work in a call center, have only worked there less than 6 months, are not certified travel agents, and have never been on a ship or to any of the ports. Their knowledge is rather limited, as they are only there to sell you something, not to provide service to you. They don't care where your cabin is located, nor do they offer you a special that might be available that would lower your price.

Good luck and I hope you get that reduction, because you deserve it.

Pete
