Default ft. lauderdale layover

We are sailing out of Miami on the explorer but could only gets flights from Ft.lauderdale. On the return, we will be in Ft. Lauderdale for approx. 6 hours before our plane leaves. Any suggestions on how to spend the day? Is there a beach near the airport that we could take a cab to?

We had a long layover in FLL last year and took a cab to a movie theater. It was in a shopping plaza with a TGIFridays for lunch. We asked a clerk in one of the airport stores for theater information. You could also look into taking the FLL water taxi. You buy a ticket that is good for the whole day and can get on and off where you please. The beach is about a $14 cab ride from the airport, but I don't know much more than that. Have fun!

Their is a lovely beach area with a boardwalk that goes for miles and outdoor cafes and bars for eating in the Hollywood Beach area, extremely close to both the airport and the peir. It is about a $8-10 cab ride. I have been here many times and can highly recommend this area. There are places to rent bikes, beach chairs, and umbrellas.

Last March our flight out of West Palm Beach did not leave until 4pm. Instead of going to the beach, etc. we just decided to go to the airport early. By arriving early we were first on the list to give up our seats (due to over booking.) As luck would have it they asked us to give up our seats for $300.00 vouchers. They booked us on the next flight and we arrived at our final destination only 45 minutes later than our original flight. And we used the $600.00 in vouchers for our next cruise. So sometimes it pays to get to the airport earlier.
